Minutes of the Tourism meeting held on Wednesday, June 29th, 2011 pursuant to notice duly given.

1. Meeting called to order by Chairperson Doeren.
2. Roll call: Dick Doeren, Beth Larson, Ken Thompson and advisory member Pete Stark. Absent: Ron Hayes, Excused: Terri Berth. Also present: Mayor Fulton, Linda Belongia Administrator and as recording secretary, Patty Rasmussen, Joe Stiloski, Don Phillips, Raoul Zerbe, Ed Young, Betty Wagner, John Hubacher, Roger Reed, John O’Neil, John Wittkopf, Joe Paluch, Gary Zahn, Ron Pecha, Ed Zahn, Atty. Calvert, Victoria Bostedt, Willie Vandenbush, Lee Rockwell and Jim Schroeder.
3. Moved by Larson seconded by Thompson to approve of the agenda as presented.
Motion carried upon verbal voice vote. 3 ayes
4. Moved by Larson seconded by Thompson to approve and place on file minutes from the 5/16/2011 meeting.
Motion carried upon verbal voice vote. 3 ayes
5. No correspondence or public input.
6. Discussion/recommendation on:
a. Mayor asked that a Tournament Director for the 2011 FLW National Guard Tournament July 17th through 23rd, 2011 be appointed; the director will be responsible for seeing that the duties and responsibilities be taken care of.
Moved by Thompson seconded by Larson to appoint Dick Doeren as the Tournament Director.
Motion carried upon verbal voice vote. 3 ayes

Noted: At 4:05 p.m. Dale Mohr and Ron Hayes arrived.

b. Event Dates; Doeren stated 7/21-7/23, but fishermen will start pre-fishing, some with families; media packets will be mailed out from the FLW; Tuesday, 7/19 at Koehne sponsored by Chevrolet from 6-8 p.m.; Wednesday, 7/20 will be registration and Taste of Oconto at the Bond Center; Thursday, 7/21 & 7/22 will be the start of the tournament; as of today we can expect 120 boats, weigh in will be at 3 p.m.; Saturday the field of boaters are eliminated down to the top 10 fisherman; also on Saturday will be a National Guard mini tournament and a fish tank sponsored by Zebco for kids; should be done estimated 6-7 p.m. Saturday night; Gary Zahn stated with 120 at this time x 2 per boat = 240 at this time for the finger food buffet which will be done on a per price basis…estimated at this time $675.00;

Noted: 4:15 p.m. Atty Calvert and Ed Zahn arrived.

Doeren questioned if the Sportsmen’s Club signed up for two weekends? Mayor checked and stated yes.
Pete Stark stated no one has committed to being a vendor at the Breakwater;
Ron Pecha questioned what hours do we want a vendor out there?
Doeren stated Friday, Saturday and Sunday;
Lee Rockwell stated we will have a problem out there with the electrical;
Doeren stated he will contract Howie Schaden;
John Wittkopf stated the Elks were going to last year but were told they couldn’t sell beer so they didn’t apply for a license; Doeren stated they couldn’t get workers is why they didn’t apply for the license;
g. Doeren stated what Oconto has to do is Wednesday from 2 – 4:30 p.m.
h. Already covered tournament vendor arrivals
i. Registration/finger food buffet will be at Bond Center.
j. Top Ten Awards Banquet will be held at the Dockside.
k. Doeren stated nothing real drastic on advertising till media package comes up; Raoul Zerbe
stated we should get signs up around the city; Ron Hayes stated the Chamber of Commerce
was contacted by the Milwaukee Sentimental/Journal and will run a story that is being put
together to run the week before the tournament; Joe Stiloski questioned if City Docks will be
used…it will be the last week of summer school and the kids will be out there fishing;
l. Doeren suggested entertainment after the weigh in is done; Gary Zahn stated he feels
downtown will have entertainment and it was mentioned electrical will be a problem out
there; Raoul Zerbe agreed, enough going on for tournament;
m. & n. Traffic control, Doeren state harbor masters have done a good job in past…boat
trailers will be parked at City Docks; John Wittkopf questioned will the local people be
charged the boat launching fee? Mayor & Doeren stated it will be a free weekend for
everyone.
o. Security Doeren stated police cadets will do this; Don Phillips stated we have three cadets,
do not want them patrolling along, will have two to a car…what days are we talking about?
Mayor stated we’ll need additional police on patrol as well; Don Phillips stated Dale Carper
didn’t know the expectations and time regarding the cadets; Doeren stated he will meet
with Don on this;
p. Shuttle Service, Doeren stated Roger Reed contacted the Com on Aging and they will let us
use two for sure, maybe three of their vans for this; Pete Stark question what about the
spectators going to the Harbor to see what is going on? Doeren stated parking will be
allowed on Harbor Road and Cty Y; Roger Reed will take care of shuttle service;
q. Doeren stated the fishermen start launching at 4 a.m., encourages restaurants to consider
opening earlier to accommodate them;
r. Doeren stated the reader boards in the city should start welcoming the FLW the Sunday
before;
s. Business coupons. Ron Hayes will solicit chamber members; Pete Stark stated the Beyer
Home and Copper Culture museum will have extended hours;
t. Super Saturday. No comment
u. National Guard program Doeren stated will be interaction things for kids and adults.
v. Tents. Gary Zahn suggested calling Jerry Wusterbarth.
w. Port-a-Potties Ken Thompson suggested Doeren contact Steve Jahnke.
x. Doeren stated Kale Proksch will get the bleachers out to the Breakwater for the
tournament.
y. Doeren stated city per agreement will pay for seven hotel rooms for the tournament and
Sonny Reynolds will pay for two additional rooms.
z. Doeren stated we will provide Oconto water to the fisherman; Belongia stated we need to
know qty requested.
aa. Doeren stated he was contacted by the Town of Little River Fire Dept on setting up as a
vendor…initially thought our Oconto businesses should have first choice, but with no
response, open up to whoever wants to be a vendor;
bb. Doeren stated fish casualties will go to local food pantries.
cc. Trash control/containers & pick up.
dd. Doeren selected the Nov & Dec issue of FLW advertisement for City of Oconto’s ad.
ee. Doeren stated WOCO will do remote…not sure what days;
ff. Doeren stated we want to do this tournament right the first time, they are also talking
about next year…they do four FLW tournaments/yr; it’s an honor to have it hear;

Registration…finger food buffet and what being held on Friday night. Mayor told Doeren to check with Sonny…what do the fishermen do at the end of the day? John Hubacher stated where will the round tables come from Bond Center doesn’t have any; Doeren stated we will use long tables; Doeren stated Cruisers offered their showroom, talked to Sonny on this, too late to change the schedule;

Raoul Zerbe asked if he could rope off his parking lot for customers. Doeren stated yes.

Ed Young suggested the businesses put our feather flags advertising their business; Doeren stated the FLW wouldn’t approve of this; TV coverage on this tournament will be to over 460M households around the world;

Doeren stated at the end of the tournament we will receive an evaluation, comments, what we did good/bad;

Mayor promoted how well Sonny Reynolds prepares for these tournaments;

John Hubacher stated he will contact school on getting tables and chairs;
